NEWPORT County boss Anthony Hudson has vowed to push on with further transfer deals after clinching the signing of goalkeeper Danny Potter from Torquay United.

The Exiles have also agreed a deal that sees ‘lucky charm’ midfielder Scott Rogers stay at the club, but County are set to miss out on signing Kerry Morgan.

Hudson wrapped up the signing of Potter on Saturday just hours after his club Torquay were consigned to another year in League Two by Stevenage Borough, Craig Reid’s side, who triumphed 1-0 in the playoff final.

Potter, a graduate of the Chelsea youth academy, spent three years at Cambridge United before signing with Torquay and also had a spell with Weymouth.

He is set to replace Glyn Thompson as County’s number one and the signs are that Thompson, who is based in the Midlands, will be on the move shortly.

However, Hudson promises his recruitment drive isn’t over, though it’s unlikely to include WPL bound Morgan.

The Argus understands that Morgan – who has been in discussions with the Exiles – has had a better financial offer from a Welsh Premier League club, believed to be Neath Athletic – and will join the Europa League outfit and snub County.

However, boss Hudson is pushing on with plans to strengthen and is still targeting a central defender, a back-up goalkeeper, a winger, a central midfielder and another striker.

"We want to push on now, we’ve got the first two signings done (Craig McAllister joining on Friday) and it’s been a good start for us," he said.

"We are thrilled to have landed Danny, he has a real presence about him and came highly recommended by an awful lot of people.

"He is a good age – 32 – and has excellent experience as well.

"His major quality is his distribution which is superb and I have no doubts he’ll be one of, if not the, best goalkeepers in the Conference next season."

However, the Potter signing isn’t in isolation.

"We need more quality across the board, we are only too aware of that," he said. "We won’t be rushed into rash decisions, we have targets in mind and it’s just trying to get them with interest from other clubs."

Midfielder Scott Rogers looks set to stay after agreeing new terms. He is signing his renewed contract on Wednesday.

However, the club has surprisingly publicly given up the ghost in attempting to keep Jamie Collins.

Collins looks set to be reacquainted with former County boss Dean Holdsworth at League Two Aldershot, though the Shots deny any deal is in place and categorically state Collins has not had a medical.

However, in a barely disguised inference to the club in a County Enews statement, Hudson commented: "Although technically still a free agent, we understand that Jamie has undergone a medical south west of London with view to signing in the next couple of days. I am sure you’ll join me in wishing him all the best for the future."
