CEFN Fforest super-bantamweight Rob Turley believes he can shock the man known as the new Barry McGuigan on Saturday night.

Turley challenges Belfast’s highly-rated Carl Frampton for the Celtic title as the chief support on the Matchroom Sport bill at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena.

And while most of the attention will be on Newbridge’s Gavin Rees as he goes for the European lightweight title, Turley knows it could be a big night for him too.

“I’m looking forward to it. It’s a big opportunity for me, a big stepping stone,” said the 24-year-old, who trains with Tony Borg at Newport’s St Joseph’s gym.

“Prizefighter had more publicity but it was only three rounds. This is the biggest fight of my career because there’s more at stake. If I win this I’ll get a British title shot.”

Unbeaten Frampton will be a very tough opponent, with bookmakers quoting odds of 11/2 against the Gwent man in a two-horse race.

“Carl Frampton is a sensational prospect,” said former featherweight world champ McGuigan, who manages the young prospect. “I have held the pads with lots of guys but I can’t remember many making my hands ache like this.

“He is only 5ft 41⁄2ins but he hits harder than I did. I know a great fighter when I see one. He has the X Factor in spades and will be as big as I was.”

But Turley is undaunted, predicting he will surprise Frampton with his boxing skills and unorthodox movement.

“He’s a strong opponent, a step up from what I’ve faced before, but I’m confident I can step it up a level,” said Turley.

“I’m the underdog but I’ll use that to my advantage. The bookies are against me so if I’m a winner my friends will be too.

“He’s a big name out there. He’s on the rise but I’m definitely going to be the best fighter he’s been in with,” he added.

“I’ll know a lot more about him than he’ll know about me and if he’s judging me on the Prizefighter bout with Jamie Arthur he’ll be in for a surprise.

“That was a messy fight because we knew each other so well. It was a scrap and I didn’t show my skills and my movement so I know I can shock him on the night.”

Pontypool’s Jeff Evans is also on the bill on Saturday when he takes on Sheffield’s Dean Walker in a four-round contest. Tickets, priced £30 unreserved and £50 ringside, are available from the Motorpoint Arena box office on 02920 224488.
