The outsider, ranked 108 in the European Tour's Race to Dubai, finished his opening round on seven under par after shooting 64.
Sweden's Peter Hanson is two shots behind on five under after 16 holes.
Newport's Phillip Price is currently one under par. Blackwood's Bradley Dredge tees off at 1.05pm.
