NEWPORT’S Gary Buckland looks set to challenge Gary Sykes for his British super-featherweight title later this year after beating Jose Roberto Gonzalez in Mexico in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The St Joseph’s fighter won a unanimous points decision against Gonzalez on the undercard of Ryan Rhodes’ unsuccessful challenge for the WBC light-middleweight title against Saul Alvarez in Jalisco.
Buckland will now turn his attention to old foe Sykes.
The British Boxing Board of Control has requested purse bids from promoters to stage the fight, which must take place before the end of October.
Sykes suffered the only defeat of his career when he was knocked out by Buckland in the three-round Prizefighter competition last November.
Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sean McGoldrick was knocked out of the European Boxing Championships in Turkey on Saturday.
The Newport 56kg fighter, making his first international appearance since finally being crowned Commonwealth bantamweight champion, lost 17-10 on points to home favourite Ulas Furkan Memis in Ankara.
