Newport’s Justyn Hugh aims to keep his perfect record intact since turning professional three years ago as he bids for his eighth successive win against Robert Studzinski in Plymouth next month.
The 27 year-old light heavyweight has been keen to get back in the ring since claiming his seventh consecutive victory over Jody Meikle at the Leisure Centre back in February.
Hugh said: “I was keen to keep up the momentum after that win and had hoped to have had a bout, or two, by now but several fights fell through during the interim.
“But I’ve kept busy in the gym and have always been ready in case the opportunity came along.”
Although born in Zychlin, Poland, Studzinski has been based in Llanelli for the past four years. He initially started at a boxing gym solely for fitness training before eventually putting on the gloves and climbing through the ropes.
Studzinski then went on to win most of his ten amateur bouts before being left with a dilemma – the Welsh ABA calls a halt to active participation on your 34th birthday.
That prompted him to turn professional with Kas Davies to remain on active service in the ring.
He has had two outings since trading in his vest – a points loss in his debut against Macca McCaffrey at Chippenham followed by a fourth round stoppage of Shazad Hussain at Halifax.
Hugh said: “The boy is no mug and certainly knows how to handle himself. I saw the video of his debut and it was an impressive performance for an entry into the paid ranks – I won’t be taking anything for granted.”
It is the first time Hugh has fought anywhere outside his home town since going pro and he is looking forward to it.
He added: “Boxing someone from Llanelli means we’ll be taking the traditional South Wales rivalry all the way to Devon which is bound to add some extra spice.”
Also boxing on the same Plymouth card is Newport middleweight Lee Churcher.
Tickets, starting at £30 are available from Churcher on 07947 679616 or Hugh on 07572 954145.
