NATHAN Cleverly has vowed his world title reign won’t be a Mickey Mouse one, even if he has spent his down time with Goofy and co at the Magic Kingdom.
The Cefn Fforest fighter, the brightest young prospect in British boxing, is now dining at boxing’s top table after becoming the WBO light heavyweight champion last month on a glory night at London’s O2 Arena.
Cleverly made short work of stand-in opponent Aleksy Kuziemski after champion Jurgen Braehmer was finally stripped of his title after avoiding a battle with Cleverly for approaching a year.
The undefeated former British, Commonwealth and European champion is now setting his sights on conquering America, but has already been to the place where they say dreams come true as the enormity of his achievement sank in.
“Usually I’d spend time between fights doing uni stuff, but this time it has been different,” the maths whizz with a degree from Cardiff University explained.
“But obviously now it’s all boxing, and with so much to come my girlfriend and I decided to have a break and we headed to Florida, Harry Potter Land was amazing to be fair.
“We did all the theme parks and it was absolutely fantastic, I love it over there in the States and hopefully next year I’ll be back doing what I do best. I am a world champion now, I belong at that level and I intend to do big things.
“I guess you could say it won’t be a Mickey Mouse reign!”
Cleverly is no stranger to boxing on the other side of the Pond after becoming the first Welshman in 25 years to fight in the States when he beat Antonio Baker on the undercard of then stablemate Joe Calzaghe’s clash with Bernard Hopkins.
The unbeaten 24-year old is now determined to unify the division and is ready, willing and able to travel to the USA, but admits a clash with one of the other champions is likely to have to wait.
WBC champion Hopkins remains Cleverly’s dream fight, but the 45-year old will clash with ‘bad’ Chad Dawson in October.
That leaves IBF king Tavoris Cloud – also unbeaten – and WBA champion Beibut Shumenov as possible options, but neither fight is likely for this year.
Instead, Cleverly is set for a defence in the UK – with Tony Bellew, who at one stage was set to be the replacement for Braehmer and who participated in an explosive press conference with the champion – a rumoured opponent.
“I think first thing will be a title defence, hopefully in Wales, because I haven’t fought at home since 2007,” he explained.
“After that we will look to America and all the world champions are attractive fights.
“Hopkins is the dream fight, but the other two would be great opportunities, Tavoris Cloud and I have already had some banter over the internet and Shumenov says he wants to fight me.
“He is based out in Las Vegas so that could potentially be perfect.
“I am back in the gym now, the holiday did me good even if the food portions in Florida didn’t.
“I can’t wait to make my first defence, and as soon as my promoter, Frank Warren, gives me the word, we will have news of who and where I am fighting.”
There is no prospect of an all-Welsh affair with former cruiserweight world champion Enzo Maccarinelli, a former stablemate of Cleverly’s and now back training with Enzo Calzaghe in Newbridge.
It is understood that Maccarinelli will need to get back to winning ways after a damaging defeat to Alexander Frenkel last time out despite repeatedly calling out his former sparring partner.
“There is a lot that needs to happen, Enzo has to be comfortable at the weight and needs some fights under his belt first,” Warren told the Argus after Cleverly’s win on May 21.
