NEWPORT Gwent Dragons pair Aled Brew and Toby Faletau won the two top gongs at the Welsh Rugby Players Association’s awards function.
Wing Brew, 24, was named player of the year while fellow Wales squad member No 8 Faletau, 20, took the young player title.
WRPA members – made up of professional players at Wales’ four regions of the Dragons, Cardiff Blues, Ospreys and Scarlets – voted for the individual player awards.
Both Brew and Faletau enjoyed excellent seasons with the Dragons, earning them call-ups to Wales’ pre-World Cup training squad.
The duo played in Wales’ recent 31-28 defeat to the Barbarians at the Millennium Stadium which marked Faletau’s first cap, the Tongan-born back rower enjoying an accomplished debut.
The 6ft 1in, 15st 13lb Brew is a firm favourite with the fans at Rodney Parade and made 30 appearances last season, enjoying an excellent strike rate which yielded him 16 tries.
He entered himself into the record books as the region’s top try scorer in a season.
Faletau, son of former Tonga international forward Kuli, who played for Ebbw Vale, is a rising star.
The 6ft 2in, 17st Faletau was signed by the Dragons from the Bristol Academy of Sport at Filton College in 2009.
Faletau played 18 times for the Dragons in the last campaign, scoring one try.
