NEWPORT light-heavyweight Justyn Hugh is hoping history repeats itself at the Pill Millennium Centre tomorrow night.

The 27-year-old takes on Hull’s Phil Goodwin and is aiming for a repeat of his victory over the same opponent in March 2009.

On that occasion Hugh took the points verdict 59-57 over six rounds at the Newport Centre in what was only his third fight as a professional.

And with five more wins to his name since then for an impressive record of eight wins out of eight he is confident of notching up another victory in front of his home town fans.

Goodwin, aged 31, has won six and lost six of his 12 fights, including a knockout defeat to the highly-rated Tony Bellew, who is next in line to take on Cefn Fforest world champion Nathan Cleverly.

“I’m feeling confident, training has gone well and I’m looking forward to it,” said Hugh.

“I’ve beaten him before so he’ll want revenge and it should be a good competitive bout. He beat Elvis Dube, who is a good fighter, last year and I won’t be taking anything for granted.”

Hugh’s last fight was just three weeks ago on July 9 in Plymouth when he recorded the first knock-out win of his career against Llanelli-based Pole Robert Studzinski.

“I’ve just maintained my fitness with my trainer Tony Borg at St Josephs gym and I’m ready to go,” he added.

“After this fight I’ll take a week off to rest and then keep myself ticking over before hopefully being on the Gary Buckland bill in Sheffield in September.”

The main event tomorrow night is Hugh’s St Josephs training mate Lee Selby taking on Scotland’s James Ancliff for the Celtic featherweight title.

Newport middleweight Lee Churcher goes up against Costas Osben and Mountain Ash heavyweight Dorian Darch will make his pro debut against Bulgarian Tayer Mehmed.

The first fight starts at 8pm and tickets will be available on the door.
