THERE could be Heeps of trouble for Newport Drillerman Hornets if speedway's latest boy wonder lives up to his billing at Queensway Meadows Stadium on Saturday night - tapes up at 7.00pm.

Australian 15-year-old Cameron Heeps has lightening fast made himself a reputation for being the sport's most precocious talent and his debut appearance at Newport is sure to pull in fans from near and far.

The buzz surrounding Heeps has increased significantly because it was only on Tuesday that he posted a magnificent points tally of 20 from 21 in Mildenhall Fen Tigers' away 51-38 win over National League title rivals Dudley Heathens.

His performance of six heat wins and a second place from seven races was quite remarkable given his age and sparks memories of the last time such a highly-regarded Australian teenager roared around the tight, 285-metre track.

In April 2009, then-King's Lynn Stars 18-year-old Darcy Ward turned up determined to make an impact and did just that in defeating British Premier League outfit Newport Wasps almost single-handedly.

He too recorded a 20-point total on a day when only the late Paul Fry got the better of him.

I predicted Ward to be a future senior world champion and he is certainly on track - currently attempting to be the world under-21s king for the third successive year.

Now Perth-born Heeps arrives with many seeing him as having enough potential to progress to soon emulating Wards' achievement this far.

Heeps has even managed to get himself well onside with Newport fans in naming countryman and former Wasp cult-hero Frank Smart as one of his favourite riders.

The Hornets, though, can go one better than the visitors because they have not one, but two Aussies pulling up trees.

Todd Kurtz, with a magnificent 15-point maximum from five rides, and skipper Jay Herne, 10+1 also from five, forming the backbone of the Hornets' fine 47-43 success over visiting Isle of Wight Islanders last weekend.

Saturday's meeting also sees the return of Newportonian Tom Young to the side. He was recently rested, but now is back at the expense of Steven Jones, who has been released.

Both teams will be missing important riders, Hornets' recent recruit Brendan Johnson and Mildenhall's Joe Jacobs are on Great Britain under-18s duty in Sweden with the rider replacement facility being used for each.

Teams (from): Newport Hornets - Richard Andrews, Matt Bates, Jay Herne (c), rider replacement for Brendan Johnson, Todd Kurtz, James White-Williams. Tom Young.

Mildenhall Fen Tigers - Aaron Baseby, Mark Baseby, Lewis Blackbird, Danny Halsey, Jack Hargreaves, Cameron Heeps, rider replacement for Joe Jacobs. Tapes up at 7.00pm.
