TWO good performances last weekend against Leicester home and away earned us five valuable Premier League points, but we were oh so close to making it six.

In the home encounter on the Friday night the fans witnessed what many told me was the best speedway action they had seen at Queensway Meadows for many a year.

Some of the passing especially on the final bend was truly superb with young Todd Kurtz twice snatching vital points on the run in to the final flag and how the lad has blossomed this year.

I wasn’t there on the Sunday but was told he raced to an immaculate 15-point maximum for our victorious Hornets in their close win over the Isle of Wight. The lad belies his tender age and races with a maturity that augurs well for the future and as a Newport club asset this is certainly a big plus.

Todd will be in action again in the Hornets colours tonight as they face a tough encounter with Mildenhall who include their own 15-year-old sensation Cameron Heeps who is earning rave reviews wherever he rides.

We do not have a Premier League match this week despite having some meetings to catch up on as well the second phase of the Premier League matches as we could not get anyone to swap dates to ride against us – must be scared of us now we have started to hit form! Our next meeting is a week today when we face Plymouth.

It is a pity we are having this break as we were on a roll result and form wise but I know Steve Mallett and Laurence Rogers did all they could to get a meeting re-arranged.

The draw at Leicester was a bit frustrating as were leading going into heat 15 with Charlie unbeaten but Magnus Karlsson got the better of him and their 4-2 heat win earned them a point. The new track there is a difficult one with long straights and tight bends and takes some getting used to and as were have to go back there at the end of August in the second phase fixtures hopefully we can go one better and get the win.

Well with this time off and the bikes done I suppose I had better keep her indoors happy and finish off some of the jobs in the house that I’ve not yet done!
