NEWPORT Gwent Dragons director of rugby Robert Beale believes South African winger Tonderai Chavhanga is a perfect fit for Rodney Parade.

The 27-year-old speedster, pictured, has penned a one-year deal with the Dragons and will be in contention for making his debut against Ulster at the Parade next Friday.

Chavhanga, who won four caps for the Springboks and scored six tries on his international debut against Uruguay in 2005, arrived in the UK this morning and will train with his new teammates for the first time on Monday.

Beale believes it won’t take long for the winger, who is one of the fastest players in international rugby, to make his mark.

“Tonderai has got tremendous pace and is an expert finisher,” said Beale.

“Darren Edwards and his coaching team want to play expansive, attacking rugby and his counter-attacking ability will be a real threat.

“It has taken a lot of work to sort this deal out but we are confident that it will be worth it.

“Darren has had to work with limited resources (in the backs) so this signing is a timely one.

“And his arrival will certainly give us plenty of options out wide as the season progresses and Aled Brew and Will Harries return (from Wales duty and injury respectively).

“Not only that, but Tonderai’s experience from his years with the Stormers and Lions in South Africa will be invaluable in helping develop the likes of Matthew Pewtner, so we are delighted to have signed him up.”

Two of Chavhanga’s international caps came against a Shane Williams-inspired Wales in 2008.

“I am very, very excited about going to the Dragons,” he said.

“It’s something I’ve been looking to do for the last couple of years. I’ve played a few games in the Europe and although it’s pretty cold but I’m looking forward to the change.”
