NEWPORT Mike Manning Wasps won't be overawed when they face British Premier League champions-elect Glasgow in the two-legged Knockout Cup final this weekend.
The Wasps host the Scottish outfit on Saturday – tapes up at 7pm – with the return scheduled to take place at 4pm in Glasgow the following afternoon.
It's the Wasps first national final in 12 years as they seek to emulate their 1999 Premier Trophy success over another Scottish side, Edinburgh Monarchs.
Following a magnificent 59-31 home semi-final first leg win over Workington, the Wasps progressed to the final with a narrow 46-44 loss in Cumbria.
"We deserved to go through and getting to the final is a great reward for our promoters the Malletts," said Newport Speedway general manager Laurence Rogers.
"It's been a difficult time for everyone at the club, but now we can look forward to the challenge of winning a trophy.
"Glasgow are a very good side. But so are we and we will start the home leg in confident mood.
"We certainly have a very good mix of vast experience and youthful enthusiasm and we won't be fazed by the occasion."
Last weekend's 56-39 home win over Scunthorpe Scorpions was the Wasps 10th successive British Premier League win at Queensway Meadows Stadium.
Four riders – skipper Leigh Lanham, Aussie ace Jason Doyle, dashing Dane Charlie Gjedde and Swedish star Anders Mellgren – all posted double-figure scores and will be full of confidence against Glasgow.
l The weekend’s two-legged cup clash is the first of no less than five Newport v Glasgow meetings in October – the other three taking place within a 48-hour period.
On Friday, October 14, the Wasps will entertain Glasgow before the teams meet two days later in a double-header in Scotland.
The first fixture on October 16 will start at 1.30pm and the second is scheduled to begin at around 3.30pm.
