Newport Hornets 50 Scunthorpe/Sheffield 37 (abandoned after 14 heats, safety-fence damage - result stands).
NEWPORT Drillerman Hornets brought the curtain down on their 2011 speedway campaign by downing the colours of National League champions Sheffield-Scunthorpe at Queensway Meadows Stadium on Sunday night.
In a meeting in which both sides were vastly under strength, the Hornets had too much know-how around the tight, 285-metre circuit as the visitors encountered a whole series of falls and mishaps.
Brendan Johnson top scored for the Hornets, who were minus skipper Jay Herne and number-one heat leader Todd Kurtz.
The meeting was abandoned by match referee Mike Poselwhite, who took the decision after the tracks's air-bag safety fence was damaged by a crash involving Hornets' Dan Greenwood in the final heat.
Newport Drillerman Hornets 50: 1 - Rider replacement for Todd Kurtz; 2 - Richard Andrews 8+1(5); 3 - Brendan Johnson 14(5); 4 - Matt Bates 6+2(4); 5 - James White-Williams (capt) 9+1(5); 6 - Dan Greenwood 10+1(5); 7 - Freddie Owen 2+1(3); number 8 - Martin Knuckey 1+1(1).
Scunthorpe/Sheffield 37: 1 - Ross Walter 4(4); 2 - Sam Woods 0(3); 3 - Stefan Nielsen 9+1(4); 4 - Oliver Greenwood 6+1(4); 5 - Adam Wrathall (capt) 14(4); 6 - Conner Dwyer 4+1(5); 7 - Martin Wrathall 0(4).
