IT is understood Wales players will hit a jackpot of £2m if they win the Grand Slam and WRU chairman David Pickering says a bonus would be “a deserved reward” should they be successful.

But the WRU are remaining tightlipped about reports some players could pocket as much as £92,000 each should Wales defeat France at the Millennium Stadium tomorrow.

It is believed that players who have been in the 22-man squad for all the Six Nations matches this campaign will receive that figure if the team win their third Grand Slam in seven years.

Those players not selected for every match will receive a reduced pro rata amount, it is thought.

Pickering admitted a bonus scheme was in place but he refused to go into any details.

“There’s a bonus scheme based on success,” he said.

“Just as people in all walks of life like to keep their salaries confidential, so the figures involved in this arrangement will remain private.

“But as a union we believe the scheme we have in place offers a deserved reward for excellence.”

The former Wales flanker and captain, who played for his country between 1983 and 1987, added: “It is right that there is a bonus-related element for those who are competing in a tournament of such great standing.

“Every other top-level union in the world, including England and New Zealand, operates similar arrangements.”

Only ten players have been in the 22-man squad for every match so far but the incentives on offer to the players is believed to be in the £2m region.

England are also still in the hunt for a win bonus, thought to be £250,000, if they defy the odds and retain the Six Nations title.
