IN JUST a few hours time Fred Evans's family will be rooting for the Olympic star as he faces his biggest task yet-to bring home a Gold medal.
Already guaranteed at least a bronze, around 20 members of his family and friends will be hoping to squeeze a little bit more from the young boxer to secure an historic victory.
His father Fred, 44, who spoke to the Argus earlier today is travelling to the Excel Arena in a group including Evans' brothers Jason, 20 and Cruise, 7.
Evans Snr said his son has continued his wonderful achievements despite a tragic childhood.
His mother Tracy and sister Scarlett, four, were killed in a road accident in 2006, as Fred was progressing through the ranks.
He said: "She (his mum) is looking down and being so proud of Fred. We all know she's helping him along the way."
His dad spoke how Evans is a calm young man who never seems to get nervous and treats every opponent with respect.
Tonight's clash with Ukrainian world champion Taras Shelestyuk is one of his biggest yet.
But Mr Evans is not fazed: "When he was four the trainer wanted to take him on but you have to be ten before you can fight," he said.
"Since then he's practically won everything. He has about 13 to 14 gold medals he has won from different tournaments.
"We are focusing on changing the colour of this medal now."
While Mr Evans said he is unlikely to speak to his son from now until after the contest, as he "lets the trainers get on with it," his Newport coach, St Joseph's Tony Borg, will give him some extra advice before taking his seat ringside.
"It will be the furthest any Welshman has got if he wins again today. I think he will produce the goods," he said.
"He will be doing some jogging, skipping, stretching and monitoring his weight. But mentally he doesn't need any warming up. He's ready," he added.
