Newport County duo struggling to be fit to face West Ham United

Labadie suffered a hamstring strain at Walsall last week and was an unused substitute for Saturdays’ 1-0 win over Crewe Alexandra in League Two.

And Matt missed out entirely at the weekend after suffering two heavy knocks on his knee at Walsall.

Flynn admits he will make a few changes with Saturday’s trip to Forest Green Rovers in mind, especially after a physically draining match in hot conditions at the weekend.

“I think the heat on Saturday is going to make a few of them more tired than they would usually be,” said the Exiles boss ahead of tomorrow's Carabao Cup second-round tie.

“But they need to raise their game and find a little bit more energy, because we’re going to need it against a good West Ham team.

“Everybody who finished the game on Saturday is fine,” he added.

“I don’t think Joss Labadie is going to make it and I’m not sure on Jamille Matt.

“But it gives other people an opportunity to come in and, you never know, somebody might make a name for themselves.”

Scot Bennett is available after recovering from a quad injury but he may not be risked.

“Benno could be in contention,” said Flynn. “He’s back in training, which is good, but we’ve just got to weigh up whether it’s right to throw him in against West Ham.

“It’s going to be a very physical game, running-wise, but he gives us another option.”

Goalkeeper Nick Townsend, the hero at Gillingham in the last round, could start ahead of Tom King but there are no guarantees.

“I don’t feel like I have to reward anyone,” said Flynn.

“I’ll just pick a team that I think can do a job against West Ham.

“There won’t be any misguided loyalty. I’ve got to do what’s best for the team and for the football club.

“I might be making one or two changes but I’m confident that the boys who come in will do a job, as they did down in Gillingham.

“I don’t think it’ll be that many changes because we’ve got a lot more injuries than we had then.

“I need to be careful, but we want to give it a good go and do ourselves justice.

“Nobody wants to get embarrassed, but I’m confident that won’t happen.”
