NEWPORT County AFC goalkeeper Tom King has been nominated for the August PFA Bristol Street Motors League Two Player of the Month Award.
A summer signing from Millwall to replace former Exiles number one Joe Day, King has settled in superbly to life at Rodney Parade.
He recorded five successive clean sheets in August as County earned 0-0 draws at Cambridge United and Walsall, 1-0 home wins over Plymouth Argyle and Crewe Alexandra and a 2-0 victory at Forest Green Rovers last Saturday.
With Nick Townsend featuring in the Carabao Cup, King has not conceded a goal since the 2-2 home draw with Mansfield Town on the opening day of the season.
The 24-year-old has played more than 500 minutes of football without conceding and has been a key part of the team that has climbed to second in the League Two table ahead of this weekend’s home clash with Port Vale.
Asked about that impressive defensive record last week, King told the Argus: “It’s just an accumulation of a lot hard work that we put in during pre-season on defensive shape and team shape.
“The lads up front are doing an unbelievable job of defending from the front and pressing teams high.
“I’ve not been overly busy in the games, which is something I’m quite pleased with.
“But I’m hoping that, whenever I am called into action, I’m doing a good job.”
Also nominated for the August award are Mansfield striker Danny Rose, the last man to score past King, Crawley Town’s Bez Lubala, Colchester United’s Luke Norris, Forest Green’s Joseph Mills and Bradford City’s Kelvin Mellor.
Rose scored five goals in six league appearances for the Stags last month, Lubala and Norris got four in six, Mills netted three times, while defender Mellor helped the Bantams keep three clean sheets.
Voting is open now here and closes at 8am tomorrow.
