WALES manager Ryan Giggs has confirmed that Newport County AFC goalkeeper Tom King is under consideration for a call-up to the national team.
Plymouth-born King qualifies for Wales through his mother and grandmother and he told the Argus last month that he would “100 per cent welcome” a call-up.
And he is on Giggs’ radar, with the national manager revealing that goalkeeping coach Tony Roberts watched King in County’s 1-0 home win over Port Vale on September 7.
“During the last camp, Tony went to watch him on the Saturday so he looked at him, but we’re just looking,” said Giggs.
“Tony looks at all the goalkeepers who qualify to play for Wales.
“We’re aware of Tom and Tony was impressed with him and obviously Newport have been flying over the last year or so, or longer.”
Giggs admits that he is concerned by the lack of game-time for number one Wayne Hennessey at Crystal Palace, and deputies Danny Ward at Leicester City and Adam Davies at Stoke City.
“It is a concern because you need to be in that rhythm and it’s always better when your goalkeepers are playing regularly,” he said.
“Obviously, Wardy’s been in this situation for a few years now. Adam was flying last year and Wayne was in an out.
“So it is a problem. You want all your players to be playing.
“Tony has looked at a few but I think the three that we’ve got have got the best qualities,” added Giggs.
“To throw in a younger goalkeeper who is playing would be to much of a risk at the moment, so I’m happy with the quality of the three goalkeepers I’ve got but obviously I’d like them to be playing.”
King’s Exiles teammate Danny McNamara, who is on loan from Millwall, has been called up to the Republic of Ireland under-21 squad again and he’ll miss the League Two match at Cheltenham Town on October 12.
