The touring cast of Grease the Musical took to the stage in Cardiff between September 2nd and 7th, bringing the vibrant colours and high energy of Rydell High to Wales.

The cast, consisting of Marley Fenton as Danny Zuko, Hope Dawe as Sandy Dumbrowski, and Rebecca Stenhouse as Rizzo, are instantly recognisable as the iconic characters, while also bringing their own unique interpretations with their performances.

Grease the Musical adapts the iconic 1978 movie musical starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John to the stage, providing equal parts joy and nostalgia for younger and older audiences alike.

Included among the soundtrack are hits from the beloved film, such as ‘You’re The One That I Want’, ‘Greased Lightnin’’, and ‘Summer Nights’.

The show also features many original songs that feel right at home among the iconic songs we all know and love from the film.

This energetic stage show incorporates extensive and impressive choreography, incredible set pieces and props, and costumes that feel like they’ve jumped out of the film onto the stage.

Audiences seemed to respond very positively to the show, with the cast receiving a standing ovation at the end of their performance on Friday, September 6th, and a wave of cheers and applause after each song and dance number.

In particular, ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’ resonated strongly with the Friday night audience, with actress Hope Dawe receiving a minute long round of applause after her rendition of the iconic hit song.

Chris Guscott, an audience member for the Friday night performance, said in an interview during the show’s interval that the production is “a worthy and faithful adaptation of the film”, describing the sets and overall production design as “brilliant”.

The 1978 film Grease, a beloved classic amongst older and younger generations alike, started out as a performance at Kingston Mines nightclub, Chicago, in 1971, with the first Broadway performance opening in 1972 before it closed in 1980.

The musical has also had runs in the West End, opening in 1973 and being revived for the London stage scene many times in 1979, 1993, and 2007.

The Wales Millennium Centre are frequent hosts of memorable and fun-filled theatre performances, with ‘Wicked’ debuting at the venue on October 24th and running until November 23rd, and world-renowned musical ‘Hamilton’ opening its performances to the Welsh public on November 26th, with its run lasting until January of 2025 – a full list of events can be found on Wales Millennium Centre’s website.
