We often hear the phrase “It’s too late” surrounding the issue of exercise, especially amongst the elderly.
Staying fit and healthy is undoubtedly important to everyone; but for the elderly, who are often more vulnerable to health complaints, exercise is imperative - whether someone is as fit as a marathon runner, or has not exercised in over 50 years.
For 83-year-old Marilyn, retired social worker, “too late” is not the answer. A few months ago, Marilyn “was advised to start exercising by my doctor due to multiple health and mobility problems; and I have been consistently going each week since.”
There are many misconceptions surrounding exercise, particularly amongst the elderly. I spoke to Marilyn about this topic, and her positive experiences in the gym will hopefully clear things up and encourage others to begin and continue their fitness journeys.
“There are lots of programmes crafted for the elderly, but mine is called ‘balance and strengthening’ and it is designed to aid loss of action through exercises – all focused around a chair, so it feels safe” says Marilyn.
Not having much previous experience with the gym came with assumptions, such as the thought that gyms were boring. “The exercises aren’t boring, instead, they mirror everyday activities which helps us at home - adding a sense of purpose to the workouts.”
Marilyn went on to list different activities that programmes like hers aids, such as “polishing windows, bending down, and reaching up into cupboards.”
Falls are one of the leading causes for death amongst the elderly today. There are many ways we can prevent and minimise injury, and one of these ways is exercise. “We do certain exercises that aid us in case you fall on the floor and need to get up.”
Marilyn also discussed other reasons apart from getting stronger for going to the gym: “It’s an excellent way for meeting new people and getting to know others who may have similar health issues to you.”
To add a sense of structure into retired life, exercise classes are a great way to create order back into your days, whilst also “building up flexibility, mobility and strength.”
Overall, whether your goal is to make a pair of trousers fit a little better, or to meet new people, take Marilyn as your role model and start exercising today – and remember it is never too late to start.
